How to Spread Bet on the Euro/Dollar Market

Let's say you go on Financial Spreads and the current price is:

Bid Ask
  Euro/Dollar Rolling Daily 1.32480 1.32490

This is a brief guide to how it works:

MarketEuro/Dollar Rolling Daily
Spread Betting Price$1.32480 - $1.32490
What This MeansNow you can take a position on the euro/dollar rolling daily market moving:

  Spread Betting Above $1.32490, or
  Spread Betting Below $1.32480

This market is a 'Rolling Daily' market and so there is no expiry date for this spread bet. If you don't close your trade and the session ends then your trade will roll over into the next session.

If a trade does roll over then you will either pay or receive interest for overnight financing based upon whether you are betting on the market to decrease or increase. For further information also see Rolling Spread Betting.
Traded UnitsSpread bets on the euro/dollar market are priced in £x per point.

Where a point is $0.00010 of the forex market’s price movement.

E.g. if the euro/dollar moves by $0.00550 then you would win / lose 55 multiples of your stake.
Trade SizeYou choose how much you want to risk per point, e.g. £2 per point, £5 per point, £20 per point etc.
Brief Staking ExampleIf, as an example, you have a stake of £3 per point and the euro/dollar moves $0.00220 (22 points), you would lose or gain £3 per point x 22 points = £66.

Worked Spread Betting Example - Buying the Euro/Dollar

Financial spread trading on the FX pair to move up in value

You Consider Whether to Go Long or Short The euro/dollar to move:

  Spread Betting Above $1.32490? or
  Spread Betting Below $1.32480?

Let’s Assume You Want to Buy   Spread Betting Above $1.32490
You Choose Your Stake Size, Let's Say You Select £3 per point
Now What Happens?
  • You make a gain of £3 for each point ($0.00010) the euro/dollar increases higher than $1.32490
  • You lose £3 for every point ($0.00010) the euro/dollar goes lower than $1.32490
When Speculating on a Market to Rise Your Trading Profits (or Losses) = (Closing Price - Opening Price) x stake

Scenario 1
The euro/dollar goes higher and the market is revised to $1.32907 - $1.32917, so you'd see:
1.32907

1.32917
Lock in a Profit? At this point, you can opt to keep your spread bet open or close it, i.e. close your trade to lock in a profit. In this case you choose to settle your position and sell at $1.32907.
Your Trading Profits (or Losses) = (Closing Price - Opening Price) x stake
($1.32907 - $1.32490) x £3 per point (£3 per $0.00010)
$0.00417 x £3 per point
41.7 points x £3 per point
Your Trading Profits (or Losses) = £125.10 profit

Scenario 2
The euro/dollar slips and the spread trading market is revised and moved to $1.32026 - $1.32036, i.e. you'd see:
1.32026

1.32036
Time to Limit the Loss? You can decide to keep your bet open or close it, i.e. close your position to limit your loss. In this example you choose to settle your bet by selling at $1.32026.
Your Trading Profits (or Losses) = (Closing Price - Opening Price) x stake
($1.32026 - $1.32490) x £3 per point (£3 per $0.00010)
-$0.00464 x £3 per point
-46.4 points x £3 per point
Your Trading Profits (or Losses) = -£139.20 loss

Spread Betting Example - Taking a Bearish View of the Euro/Dollar

Spread betting on the FX pair to decrease

You Select Whether to Go Long or Short The euro/dollar to go:

  Spread Betting Above $1.32490? or
  Spread Betting Below $1.32480?

You Might Want to Go Short   Spread Betting Below $1.32480
You Choose Your Stake, Let's Say You Choose £2 per point
So What Happens Now?
  • You lose £2 for every point ($0.00010) the euro/dollar moves above $1.32480
  • You make a gain of £2 for every point ($0.00010) the euro/dollar moves below $1.32480
If You Are Betting on a Market to Go Down Your Trading Profits (or Losses) = (Opening Price - Closing Price) x stake

Scenario 3
The euro/dollar moves lower and the spread betting market is revised and is set at $1.32011 - $1.32021, i.e. Financial Spreads would show:
1.32011

1.32021
Time to Take a Profit? At this point, you may choose to leave your position open or close it to take your profit. In this example you opt to close your trade by buying at $1.32021.
Your Trading Profits (or Losses) = (Opening Price - Closing Price) x stake
($1.32480 - $1.32021) x £2 per point (£2 per $0.00010)
$0.00459 x £2 per point
45.9 points x £2 per point
Your Trading Profits (or Losses) = £91.80 profit

Scenario 4
The euro/dollar pushes higher and the financial spread betting market becomes $1.32980 - $1.32990, therefore you'd see:
1.32980

1.32990
Time to Restrict Your Loss?At this point, you may decide to leave your spread bet open or close it, i.e. close your spread bet to limit your loss. In this instance you opt to settle your trade by buying the market at $1.32990.
Your Trading Profits (or Losses) = (Opening Price - Closing Price) x stake
($1.32480 - $1.32990) x £2 per point (£2 per $0.00010)
-$0.00510 x £2 per point
-51 points x £2 per point
Your Trading Profits (or Losses) = -£102.00 loss

How to Spread Bet on the Pound/Dollar Market

As an example, let's assume you sign into the FinancialSpreads website and see the current quote is:

Bid Ask

This is a brief example of how the market works:

Spread Betting Market:Pound/Dollar Rolling Daily
The Quote:$1.62820 - $1.62840
This Means:Now you can bet on the pound/dollar rolling daily market to go:

Spread Betting Higher than $1.62840, or
  Spread Betting Lower than $1.62820

This is a Rolling Daily trade meaning that it does not have a settlement date. If you decide not to close your trade and the trading session ends then your position will roll over into the next session.

Note that if the trade is rolled over then you will normally either be charged or receive a small fee for overnight financing based upon whether you are betting on the market to move higher or lower. To learn more also see Rolling Daily Spread Betting.
Trading Units:Financial spread bets on the pound/dollar market are priced in £x per point.

Where a point is $0.00010 of the forex pair's price movement.

E.g. if the pound/dollar moves by $0.00400 then you would gain or lose 40 multiples of your stake.
Stake Size:You work out what to risk per point, e.g. £1 per point, £8 per point, £15 per point etc.
Quick Staking Example:With that in mind, if you had a stake of £4 per point and the pound/dollar moves $0.00280 (28 points), you would win/lose £4 per point x 28 points = £112.

Worked Spread Trading Example - Taking a Bullish View of the Pound/Dollar

Financial spread betting on the currency market to go up

You Select Whether to Buy or Sell: The pound/dollar going:

Spread Betting Higher than $1.62840? or
  Spread Betting Lower than $1.62820?

Let’s Say You Buy:   Spread Betting Higher than $1.62840
You Select Your Stake Size, Choosing: £1 per point
Now What Happens?
  • You win £1 for each point ($0.00010) the pound/dollar pushes higher than $1.62840
  • You will make a loss of £1 for every point ($0.00010) the pound/dollar falls lower than $1.62840
If You Are Spread Betting on a Market to Rise Your P&L = (Final Price - Opening Price) x stake

Situation 1
The pound/dollar goes higher and the market adjusts and moves to $1.63817 - $1.63837, therefore Financial Spreads would show:
1.63817

1.63837
Close for a Profit? You could choose to leave your position open or close it, i.e. close your position to lock in your profit. For this example, you opt to close your bet by selling the market at $1.63817.
Your P&L = (Final Price - Opening Price) x stake
($1.63817 - $1.62840) x £1 per point (£1 per $0.00010)
$0.00977 x £1 per point
97.7 points x £1 per point
Your P&L = £97.70 profit

Situation 2
The pound/dollar goes lower and the spread trading market is adjusted to $1.61985 - $1.62005, i.e. you would see:
1.61985

1.62005
Time to Limit Your Loss? You may choose to keep your bet open or close it, i.e. close your trade to limit your loss. For this example, you decide to settle your trade by selling at $1.61985.
Your P&L = (Final Price - Opening Price) x stake
($1.61985 - $1.62840) x £1 per point (£1 per $0.00010)
-$0.00855 x £1 per point
-85.5 points x £1 per point
Your P&L = -£85.50 loss

Worked Trading Example - Taking a Short Position on the Pound/Dollar

Spread betting on the currency market to go down

You Now Decide to Go Long or Short: The pound/dollar to move:

Spread Betting Higher than $1.62840? or
  Spread Betting Lower than $1.62820?

Let's Say You Choose to Sell:   Spread Betting Lower than $1.62820
You Decide Your Stake Size, Let's Assume You Opt For: £3 per point
Now What?
  • You will make a loss of £3 for every point ($0.00010) the pound/dollar rises higher than $1.62820
  • You win £3 for every point ($0.00010) the pound/dollar goes lower than $1.62820
When Spread Betting on a Market to Fall Your P&L = (Opening Price - Final Price) x stake

Situation 3
The pound/dollar decreases and the financial spread betting market changes to $1.62360 - $1.62380, so you'd see this on Financial Spreads:
1.62360

44 points x £3 per point
Your P&L = £132.00 profit

Situation 4
The pound/dollar pushes higher and the spread betting market is revised and moved to $1.63185 - $1.63205, i.e. on Financial Spreads you'd see:
1.63185

1.63205
Time to Restrict the Loss? You may opt to let your trade run or close it, i.e. close your trade to restrict your loss. In this example you decide to close your bet by buying at $1.63205.
Your P&L = (Opening Price - Final Price) x stake
($1.62820 - $1.63205) x £3 per point (£3 per $0.00010)
-$0.00385 x £3 per point
-38.5 points x £3 per point
