A Guide to Spread Trading on the S&P 500

For example, let's assume that you look at Financial Spreads and see the current price is:

Bid Ask
  S&P 500 Rolling Daily 1374.5 1374.8

This is a brief guide to how the market works...

Spread Betting Market:S&P 500 Rolling Daily
The Spread Betting Quote:1374.5 - 1374.8
How the Spread Works:Now you can spread bet on the S&P 500 Rolling Daily market to move:

  Spread Betting Above 1374.8, or
  Spread Betting Below 1374.5

This is a Rolling Daily market so it does not have a closing date. If you don't close your trade and the session ends then your trade will roll over to the next trading day.

Note: if a trade rolls over then you will normally either have to pay or receive a small fee for overnight financing depending on whether you are speculating on the market to go up or down. For further information see Rolling Spread Bets.
Units (Points) Traded:Financial spread bets on the S&P 500 market are made in £x per 0.1 points.

Where 0.1 points is 0.1 points of the index's price movement.

E.g. if the S&P 500 changes by 5.5 points then you would lose/win 55 times your stake.
Stake per Unit:You work out how much you want to stake per 0.1 points, e.g. £1 per 0.1 points, £2 per 0.1 points, £5 per 0.1 points, £15 per 0.1 points etc.
Brief Example:If, as an example, your stake is £4 per 0.1 points and the S&P 500 moves 2.5 points, you would lose or gain £4 per 0.1 points x 2.5 points = £100.

Worked Spread Betting Example - Going Long of the S&P 500

Financial spread betting on the US stock market index to move higher

You Now Consider Whether to Buy or Sell: The S&P 500 going:

  Spread Betting Above 1374.8? or
  Spread Betting Below 1374.5?

Let’s Assume You Decide to Buy:   Spread Betting Above 1374.8
You Select How Much to Risk, Choosing: £2 per 0.1 points
Now What Happens?
  • You will win £2 for each 0.1 points the S&P 500 pushes higher than 1374.8
  • You will lose £2 for every 0.1 points the S&P 500 falls below 1374.8
When Speculating on a Market to Increase Your Trading P&L = (Final Price - Opening Price) x stake

Scenario 1
The S&P 500 moves higher and the market is moved to 1382.4 - 1382.7. I.e. the market moves to:
1382.4

1382.7
Lock in a Profit? At this point, you may choose to leave your bet on the US stock market open or close it, i.e. close your position to lock in a profit. In this example you decide to settle your position by selling the market at 1382.4.
Your Trading P&L = (Final Price - Opening Price) x stake
(1382.4 - 1374.8) x £2 per 0.1 points
7.6 points x £2 per 0.1 points
Your Trading P&L = £152 profit

Scenario 2
The US stock market falls and the S&P 500 market is revised to 1367.9 - 1368.2, so you would see this on Financial Spreads:
1367.9

1368.2
Limit Your Loss? At this point, you can decide to leave your spread bet open or close it, i.e. close your trade to limit your loss. In this case you decide to settle your position by selling at 1367.9.
Your Trading P&L = (Final Price - Opening Price) x stake
(1367.9 - 1374.8) x £2 per 0.1 points
-6.9 points x £2 per 0.1 points
Your Trading P&L = -£138 loss

Spread Betting Example - Selling the S&P 500

Spread betting on the US stock market index to fall in value

You Choose to Go Long or Short: The S&P 500 to push:

  Spread Betting Above 1374.8? or
  Spread Betting Below 1374.5?

Let's Say You Choose to Sell:   Spread Betting Below 1374.5
You Select Your Stake, Let's Assume You Opt For: £3 per 0.1 points
What Happens Now?
  • You will lose £3 for every 0.1 points the S&P 500 pushes above 1374.5
  • You will win £3 for every 0.1 points the S&P 500 goes below 1374.5
When Speculating on a Market to Go Down Your Trading P&L = (Opening Price - Final Price) x stake

Scenario 3
The S&P 500 slips and the financial spread betting market is revised and moved to 1369.8 - 1370.1. Therefore you would see this on Financial Spreads:
1369.8

1370.1
Time to Lock in a Profit? You could opt to leave your trade on the US market open or close it and take your profit. In this example you opt to settle your position by buying the market at 1370.1.
Your Trading P&L = (Opening Price - Final Price) x stake
(1374.5 - 1370.1) x £3 per 0.1 points
4.4 points x £3 per 0.1 points
Your Trading P&L = £132 profit

Scenario 4
The S&P 500 rises and the 'spread' is changed to 1378.2 - 1378.5. So you would see this on Financial Spreads:
1378.2

1378.5
Close and Limit the Loss?At this point, you could opt to keep your bet open or close it, i.e. close your trade to restrict your losses. In this instance you opt to settle your trade and buy at 1378.5.
Your Trading P&L = (Opening Price - Final Price) x stake
(1374.5 - 1378.5) x £3 per 0.1 points
-4.0 points x £3 per 0.1 points
Your Trading P&L = -£120 loss
  •   S&P 500 stock market prices taken from Financial Spreads as per 9 November 2012
  •   Investors can also trade on the S&P 500 in euros per 0.1 points and dollars per 0.1 points
