As an example, let's say you sign into the FinancialSpreads website and are presented with:
|
Bid |
|
Ask |
|
| Wall Street Rolling Daily |
12770.0 |
|
12771.0 |
|
Here is a brief guide to how the market works...
| Market: | Wall Street Rolling Daily |
| The Spread Trading Price: | 12770.0 - 12771.0 |
| This Means That: | Now you can trade on the Wall Street Rolling Daily market to push:
Higher than 12771.0, or
Lower than 12770.0
This is a Rolling Daily spread betting market so it does not have a closing date. If you haven't closed your position and the session ends then your position will roll over into the next trading day.
If the trade is rolled over then you will normally either pay or receive interest for overnight financing depending upon whether you are betting on the market to move higher or lower. For more information also see Rolling Daily Spread Bets. |
| Units (Points) Traded: | Spread bets on the Wall Street market are priced in £x per point.
Where a point is 1 point of the stock market index's price movement.
E.g. if Wall Street changes by 50 points then you would gain or lose 50 times your stake. |
| Stake Size per Unit: | You decide how much you would like to stake per point, e.g. £1 per point, £2 per point, £5 per point, £15 per point etc. |
| Brief Staking Example: | If you went with a stake of £2 per point and the Wall Street moves 31 points, you would make a profit or loss of £2 per point x 31 points = £62. |
Spread Betting Example - Going Long of the Wall Street
Financial spread betting on the index to rise
| You Consider Whether to Buy or Sell: |
Wall Street going:
Higher than 12771.0? or
Lower than 12770.0?
|
| Let’s Assume You Go Long: |
Higher than 12771.0
|
| You Select Your Stake, Let's Assume You Select: | £3 per point |
| So What Next? |
- You will make a profit of £3 for every point the Wall Street index moves higher than 12771.0
- Your spread bet loses £3 for each point the US index falls below 12771.0
|
| If You Are Betting on a Market to Go Up Your Trading P/L = | (Closing Price - Opening Price) x stake |
| | |
| Situation 1 |
| The US stock market increases and the spread betting market is moved to 12809.3 - 12810.3. Therefore you'd see this on Financial Spreads: |
|
12809.3 |
|
12810.3 |
|
| Lock in Your Profit? | You could choose to keep your trade open or close it for a profit. For this example, you opt to settle your bet and sell the market at 12809.3. |
| Your Trading P/L = | (Closing Price - Opening Price) x stake |
| (12809.3 - 12771.0) x £3 per point |
| 38.3 points x £3 per point |
| Your Trading P/L = | £114.90 profit |
| | |
| Situation 2 |
| Wall Street moves lower and the spread betting market is adjusted to 12738.4 - 12739.4, i.e. Financial Spreads would show: |
|
12738.4 |
|
12739.4 |
|
| Close and Restrict the Loss? | You could opt to keep your position on the US stock market open. You could also choose to close your position and restrict your losses. In this instance you decide to settle your trade and sell at 12738.4. |
| Your Trading P/L = | (Closing Price - Opening Price) x stake |
| (12738.4 - 12771.0) x £3 per point |
| -32.6 points x £3 per point |
| Your Trading P/L = | -£97.80 loss |
Trading Example - Taking a Bearish View of the US Stock Market
Online spread betting on the index to fall
| You Select Whether to Buy or Sell: |
Wall Street moving:
Higher than 12771.0? or
Lower than 12770.0?
|
| Let's Say You Decide to Sell: |
Lower than 12770.0 |
| You Decide Your Stake Size, Selecting: | £4 per point |
| Now What? |
- Your spread bet loses £4 for each point the stock market index pushes above 12770.0
- You will make a profit of £4 for each point the Wall Street index moves lower than 12770.0
|
| When Spread Betting on a Market to Fall Your Trading P/L = | (Opening Price - Closing Price) x stake |
| | |
| Situation 3 |
| Wall Street falls and the market moves to 12738.4 - 12739.4, so you would see this on Financial Spreads: |
|
12738.4 |
|
12739.4 |
|
| Time to Lock in Your Profit? | You may opt to leave your position open or close it and lock in a profit. In this example you opt to close your trade by buying at 12739.4. |
| Your Trading P/L = | (Opening Price - Closing Price) x stake |
| (12770.0 - 12739.4) x £4 per point |
| 30.6 points x £4 per point |
| Your Trading P/L = | £122.40 profit |
| | |
| Situation 4 |
| Wall Street rises and the financial spread betting market is revised to 12795.1 - 12796.1. I.e. the market moves to: |
|
12795.1 |
|
12796.1 |
|
| Restrict the Loss? | You may decide to leave your position open or close it and restrict your losses. For this example, you choose to close your trade and buy the market at 12796.1. |
| Your Trading P/L = | (Opening Price - Closing Price) x stake |
| (12770.0 - 12796.1) x £4 per point |
| -26.1 points x £4 per point |
| Your Trading P/L = | -£104.40 loss |
